The pa_favorites cookie contains a random eight-character collection credential. It connects this browser to separate lists of liked and favorite poems without requiring an account, name, or email address. The database stores that random code, an unrelated random collection identifier, and poem IDs only.
Your browser also stores a local copy of those poem IDs so it can mark hearts and bookmarks without contacting the database on every page load. Public like totals are inserted into the site during a daily build rather than fetched separately for every visitor.
If the cookie or browser storage is removed, the collection can be restored with the private /f/#xxxxxxxx link shown on the Favorites page. The part after # is handled by the browser and is not included in the initial web request. If the new browser already has likes or favorites, they are combined into the saved collection and the pasted link remains the recovery link. Anyone who has the complete link can view and change the associated collection.
Cloudflare Turnstile verifies changes to prevent automated abuse. It may run a background browser check and asks for interaction only when Cloudflare determines that additional verification is needed.
